How to read your iPhone battery cycle count
Knowing how to tell if your iPhone’s battery needs replacement based on cycle count can help you avoid replacing a battery too early—or ignoring one that is clearly worn out. A cycle count records how much of the battery’s total capacity you have used over time, rather than simply counting how many times you have plugged the phone in.
Cycle count is useful, but it is not a complete diagnosis. Battery health percentage, unexpected shutdowns, charging behaviour, temperature, and the phone’s age all matter. This is especially relevant in Australia, where a phone used outdoors in a hot Queensland summer may age differently from one kept mostly indoors in Melbourne.

What an iPhone battery cycle actually measures
One complete cycle is used when you have consumed a total of 100% of the battery’s capacity, although that usage can happen across several days. If your iPhone uses 40% on Monday and 60% on Tuesday, that adds up to one cycle. Charging from 30% to 80% does not create a complete cycle by itself.
This explains why charging frequently does not automatically damage an iPhone battery. Connecting your phone during the afternoon, in the car, or overnight can be perfectly normal. The battery is tracking energy used, not the number of times the Lightning or USB-C cable has been connected.
Lithium-ion batteries gradually lose their ability to hold charge. “Up to” is important. These figures are design expectations, not a promise that every battery will show exactly 80% at the stated point. Heat, heavy gaming, wireless charging temperatures, high brightness, poor signal, and long periods at a full charge can affect the result. An iPhone used for navigation around Sydney in direct sun may experience more heat stress than one used lightly at home.
Finding the cycle count on newer iPhones
On an iPhone 15 or newer running a supported version of iOS, open Settings, select Battery, then choose Battery Health. You should see Maximum Capacity, Cycle Count, manufacture information, and the date the battery was first used. The exact wording can vary slightly between iOS releases.
If Cycle Count is missing, update iOS through Settings > General > Software Update and check again. The feature was added for iPhone 15 models with iOS 17.4, so an older software version may not display it. Reading the number without jumping to a decision
A cycle count below Apple’s design benchmark does not automatically mean the battery needs replacing. An iPhone 15 with 700 cycles and 88% Maximum Capacity may be working very well. An older iPhone with 300 cycles and 78% capacity may already feel frustrating because battery ageing varies between individual devices.
Maximum Capacity is the percentage most people should watch first. It compares the battery’s current capacity with when it was new. At 100%, the battery can theoretically store its original amount of energy. At 80%, it stores roughly four-fifths of that amount, so the phone may need charging earlier even if everything else is operating correctly.
Apple commonly treats a battery below 80% capacity as significantly degraded and may recommend service. That does not mean the phone becomes unsafe or unusable at 79%. It means the reduced capacity is substantial enough that many users will notice shorter runtime. A battery at 82% can still be unsuitable for someone who spends all day away from a charger, while a battery at 78% might be manageable for someone working near a power point.
The best interpretation combines three figures: cycle count, Maximum Capacity, and your actual experience. A high count with good capacity is not a reason to spend money immediately. A lower count paired with rapid drain, random shutdowns, or a sudden decline deserves attention. Look at the Battery Health screen for messages such as “Service” or notifications that the battery’s condition has degraded.
Signs the battery is ready for service
Shorter battery life is the most obvious symptom, but it is not the only one.
